WHITE PICKET FENCE

ONLINE PILATES MAT CLASSES BY THE LIFT GIRL www.liftgirlpilates.com

I disclosed to a friend the other day that I was feeling tired, a bit vulnerable and insecure.  I felt overwhelmed by life and bogged down in details.

She was shocked at my feelings and said, “Really?  You feel that way?  I thought YOU had it all together and never felt those kinds of things.”

Now that really shocked me because it couldn’t have been further from the truth.

My friend went on to say how much she looks up to me, how she hoped to organize her life like mine, get involved in more outdoor activities, and begin practicing Pilates.

I admitted to her that I DO feel vulnerable on occasion, despite the image I project of having it all together.  I’m not sure anyone ever has it all together.  And if anybody claims to, a little red flag goes up inside my head.  We had a good chat about that, my friend and I.

It seems to me that part of being strong is being weak – to be vulnerable and not have all the answers all the time.  I tend to move away from people who claim to know it all.  I don’t marvel at white picket fences because to me they’re merely facades. White picket fences may be pretty, but they’re not very sturdy.  They’re only temporary, whereas I’m more interested in longevity: I’m taken more by the continuing journey and less by the  journey’s end.

The fact of the matter is that when I allow myself to feel vulnerable, I’m able to make changes and grow.  Life is about growing and making changes, not just getting there, looking good, and remaining the same.

The same holds true in Pilates.  If you always had a great class and did everything perfectly, you would eventually become bored.   Even my advanced students need new things to work on, old muscles to be reawakened, strengthened, lengthened, and stretched!   Our bodies are often overworked, strained, and just plain tired.  We sometimes feel weak and vulnerable.   It happens to ALL of us.

Pilates promotes changing, growing, and moving forward.  It’s the journey, not merely the platform.  It’s continuous, dynamic, and challenging to the body, even for the most advanced student.

Pilates helps me find myself and LIFTS  me up when I need it.  AND I DO NEED IT FROM TIME TO TIME!

Doesn’t everybody?

Bye for now!
